Farmers Market Volunteers Needed!

It’s Farmer’s Market season again and, starting this month, Community Harvest has begun working at Markets encouraging people to donate to our local food banks!

So far Markets have been a GREAT SUCCESS, and now we need MORE VOLUNTEERS to make sure Community Harvest can be at the market every week!

Multiple volunteers are needed at every market to keep each other company and give everyone shorter shifts. If you are interested in working all or part of these markets, let Hannah know:

Wenatchee Valley Farmers Market: Saturdays, 6:45am-2pm
Leavenworth Community Farmers Market: Thursdays, 3pm-8pm

TAKE THE (N)CW SNAP CHALLENGE: June 19th-25th!

Here at Community Harvest we’re all about making sure everyone in our community can eat enough fresh food to stay healthy and full. Sadly, we know fresh fruits & veggies are not always a reality for the millions of Americans living on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps) Benefits and the 1 in 5 residents of NCW struggling with food insecurity.

Help us raise awareness of hunger in America: TAKE THE (N)CW SNAP CHALLENGE!

From June 19th to 25th Community Farm Connection’s Community Harvest program and Community Services of Moses Lake are hosting the (N)CW SNAP Challenge.

Participants in the Challenge pledge to use the average SNAP benefit— $38.83 a week in Washington— as their total budget for groceries for the seven days of the Challenge.

Participants are highly encouraged to tell friend, family, co-workers, and even the press they are taking the Challenge and to share their experience on the event blog!

Planting Garden Beds: Your Garden, Your Food Workshop #3

Haven’t planted your garden yet? Don’t worry, it’s not too late!

Join Wenatchee Valley College Agriculture Department and Community Harvest for the third installment of “Your Garden, Your Food” for a “Planting Garden Beds” workshop.

Participants will learn more about planting garden beds and tour Wenatchee Valley College’s newly constructed raised beds! Taught by the highly knowledgeable Danielle Gibbs of Gibbs Organic Farm (located outside of Leavenworth), this workshop is perfect for anyone looking to start or improve their garden beds!

The workshop will be held Thursday June 13th from 5:30 to 6:30pm in 8039 Batjer Hall at WVC. More detailed driving and parking instructions will be sent to participants once they RSVP at gleaning@communityfarmconnection.org.

Attracting Beneficial Pollinators: Your Garden, Your Food Workshop #2

Last month Community Harvest and the WVC Department of Agriculture kicked off our year-long workshop series, Your Garden, Your Food with a well-received Kitchen Gardening 101 Workshop. This month we’re continuing the series with Attracting Beneficial Pollinators. Taught by Bob Gillespie, faculty in WVC’s Agriculture & Natural Resources Dept., this workshop is a MUST for anyone wanting to tempt more good insects into their garden.

Woah! What a month for Community Harvest!

Thanks for all your support this month! Without it we wouldn’t have been able to launch the Your Garden, Your Food Workshop Series with 27 attendees at the “Kitchen Gardening 101″ workshop. Up next is “Attracting Beneficial Pollinators” on May 29th! More info here.

Community Harvest also successfully hosted A Place at the Table, a powerful film exploring hunger and food insecurity in America. Over 100 people purchased tickets to the film! If you missed it you can rent it on iTunes here.

We also celebrated all our wonderful volunteers and supporters (aka YOU) at our Community Harvest Volunteer Kick-Off and Earth Day Celebration! A delicious pot luck, Señor Cluck, and good people- what more could you ask for?!?

Plant a Row Seed Saving with the Salvation Army Youth Club & Intermountain Americorps

Last week Community Harvest partnered with the Salvation Army Youth Club and Intermountain Americorps to do some old-fashioned seed saving. The carrot seeds, donated on the umbrel by Cloudview Ecofarms, will be given out to food bank clients and backyard gardeners as part of this year’s Plant a Row for the Hungry initiative!

We were having so much fun we even had some curious park-goers come over and help us out for a bit.
